The Loft Norms
Make the Most of Your Time in The Loft!
We’re so glad you’re here! The Loft is a shared, creative space, and a few simple norms help keep it welcoming, functional, and ready for the next great idea.
Before you arrive, and when it’s time to wrap up, please take a moment to review the guidelines below.
📅 Check the Loft Calendar to see when the space is available!
- The Loft is located in ESJ 2101. The easiest route is to enter Edward St. John Hall from the McKeldin Mall entrance, take an immediate right, and head up one floor using the right-hand staircase. 🎥 Here’s a video showing how to get to the Loft.
- There are two stairways and an elevator (swipe access required) that lead to the space.
- 🚪 Both Loft doors are locked by default, but they may be propped open during your session. Please remember to close both doors when you’re finished.
- 📅 The Loft calendar is visible here if you’d like to check who’s using the space before or after you. We build in 15-minute transition buffers between sessions; please reset the room and exit on time, so the next group can settle in smoothly.
- 🌳 The Treehouse (ESJ 2110) is a separate reservable space. You can book it using the QR codes in the room or by following this link. Heads up! This space requires 48 hours’ advance notice.
- 🔊 Planning a lively session? We love the energy! Just be sure to close the doors, as sound can travel down the stairwells and disrupt nearby study areas.
- Food is welcome!
- A kitchenette and restroom are available on this floor for your convenience.
- ♻️ You’ll find trash, recycling, and compost bins in the Loft; please help us out by not overfilling them.
- 🗑️ If your trash doesn’t fit in the bins, please bag it up (trash bags are under the kitchen sink) and take it to the dumpster on the east side of the building, next to Symons Hall.
- 🧹 Prefer not to handle trash removal? No problem! Reach out to us for guidance on requesting extra cleaning services through Facilities Management Housekeeping (this service is billable).
- 🙏 When food is involved, please encourage guests to sort waste properly.
- 🚫 Before you go, take all food-related items with you; including leftovers, extra utensils, and napkins. While we appreciate the generosity, we’ve already got more supplies than we can store!
- The Loft is stocked with handheld and lavalier microphones and a clicker, all located on the A/V cart.
- 📽️ Two projectors are mounted in the space and are controlled through the A/V cart system.
- 🔁 Please return all equipment to the A/V cart when you’re finished; future users will thank you!
- Before heading out, please take a few minutes to:
- ✔ Erase all whiteboards
- ✔ Remove post-its
- ✔ Take all food with you (including items in the fridge)
- ✔ Return furniture to the “Reset” layout
- ✔ Return microphones and the clicker to the A/V cart
- 🖼️ A Reset layout illustration is posted in the room; use it as your guide!
- To help keep things running smoothly, participants should exit with or after the requester, who is responsible for making sure the space is reset and all doors are securely shut.
Before you go, take a moment to make sure you’ve got everything covered:
- 📅 Checked the Loft calendar before your session
- 🚪 Closed both doors when finished
- 🧹 Reset the furniture to the posted layout
- 🎤 Returned mics and clicker to the A/V cart
- 🧼 Cleaned up food and sorted waste properly
- 👋 Requester exited last and closed both doors to ensure the space is ready for the next group
Thanks for helping keep The Loft welcoming and ready for creativity!
Enjoy The Loft!
We hope your time in The Loft is creative, collaborative, and fun. Thanks for helping us keep the space ready for the next group of innovators! ✨
