The Loft

At the Academy, we believe space can actively foster creative collaboration and learning. "The Loft" is our studio-like space where we teach classes, facilitate workshops and collaborate on projects. It is a space where learners gather to engage in innovation and design work! With a design-your-own classroom approach, huddle rooms, and a prototyping station, The Loft is designed to be designed! People who teach in The Loft arrange the space to inspire the behaviors needed for that day's activities.

The Loft allows you to design the space to enhance the goals of every session, which could include using different parts of the room for different purposes. (i.e., creating an open space for icebreakers, standing up around the whiteboards to brainstorm, setting up the soft furniture for discussions and reflections, using the rolling tables for small group work, prototyping in the prototyping area, etc.)

The Loft FAQs

Check the Loft calendar to see when it’s available, then complete the Loft request form!

The Loft is perfect for active learning, brainstorming, hands-on prototyping, and both small and large groups discussions. Leave the lectures, video screenings, or computer-based work for other classrooms and space. Once entering the Loft, it should always be in a restate state, allowing you to craft the space with intention!

The Loft fits up to 40 people comfortably.

The Loft is located in room 2101 of the Edward St. John Teaching and Learning center. The easiest way to get there is by entering from the McKeldin Mall side of the building, take an immediate right, and head up the stairs. There will be signs in the stairwell directing you to go up to the next floor. If you get turned around, no worries-check out our helpful video for extra guidance

Yes! Feel free to bring snacks and drinks-there’s even a kitchenette nearby for your convenience. Remember to clean up when you’re done, and if the trash overflows, kindly take it out before you leave.

There’s a single-use bathroom located in the Loft. It’s straight through the kitchenette and to the right.

The nearest water bottle filling station is two floors down near the restrooms. You’re also welcome to use water from the Loft sink.

There’s direct elevator access to the Loft on the brick side of ESJ. Just take it to the second floor. Note: Only the elevator on the “historic” side of ESJ can access the Loft. All other elevators in ESJ will go to the second floor but do not connect to the Loft.

The Loft is best used for dynamic sessions such as for brainstorming, prototyping, or collaborative activities. Independent study groups will not be considered high priority.
