Talking to Strangers Reflection Questions

EXPEDITION 1 REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. How many people did you say hello to? An estimate is fine.
  2. What happened when you greeted people? Did they smile? Did they notice? Did they seem uneasy, surprised, indifferent, friendly?
  3. Did you try anything different or feel any different from start to finish?

EXPEDITION 2 REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. What “third things” worked better than others? How did you initiate the conversations?
  2. How did the other person respond to you? Guarded, surprised, friendly? Describe the interaction.
  3. Compared to the saying “Hello” expedition, was this easier or harder? More fun or scarier?

EXPEDITION 3 REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. How did you and your partner work as a team to approach the stranger and conduct the interview?
  2. Did you hear or learn anything that you probably wouldn’t have gotten from just sending out anHo email or online survey?
  3. How might this type of empathy interview about someone’s personal experiences be applicable to your work or life when trying to better understand challenges and opportunities?

You both survived! Give your partner a high-five! If you’re curious to learn more or want more expeditions, check out Kio Stark’s TED talk or her book titled, “When Strangers Meet: How People You Don’t Know Can Transform You,” or reach out to the Academy.
